NEW SERIES: "Aero"

An artist is always on the hunt for new ideas, new inspiration. Often, for me at least, these new directions have their genesis in prior projects, like the composition and colors in the Tribe Series posted previously. They do not happen in a vacuum...and the observation of settings, situations, things around me often trigger the connection to past work, and serve as the extension or conduit to bring the new creations into being. This is the case with my new series "Aero". A few shots of the launching point follow. Stay tuned...this is going to be big!

Tribe Series 1 - 4

The following four series were seemingly born in an instant on March 26, 2009 (see the green Tribe Series #1, which was the first). In reality, the idea, that moment, was really the convergence of the prior 7 years of exploration of the figure, the still life, the landscape. These paintings run the gamut of these subjects...they sometimes are narrative, sometimes purely design, and mostly just plain fun to create! I compose and paint them always in groups of four, and now that there are 4 series, I wanted to present them to you in their intended groupings.

"Rodin And Italy", Revisited

During my art studies in Italy in 2001, I saw an outdoor exhibition of Rodin bronzes at the Villa Medici Museum in Rome. The juxtaposition of these sculptures in the picturesque garden caught and held my attention enough to dedicate one of my studio walls to the largest painting I have attempted to date. These pictures document the progress toward the finished mural.

Santa Fe Paintings - August 2009 Trip

The following are photos of the paintings I created on-site in Santa Fe earlier this month. Instead of bringing my easel to a location to paint like my trips in 2008, I took pictures with my EOS Rebel from multiple locations, and then selected one image from all the photos to then translate into a painting back at my friend Todd's art studio. Sort of a visual art photo safari. This technique allowed me to see more different locations over a 4 day period than the traditional plein air method, and to use oil paints rather than the water-based goauche paint I bring into to the field.

Tribe Series in Wood

The following are some shots taken of wood sculptures I am developing based on the series of images seen in the new "Tribe Series" of paintings and prints I have been creating. The tallest group is approximately 20" high. These can sit on any flat surface or be mounted and hung flush against any wall. These will ultimately be primed and painted in a variety of interesting colors.

The following are pics of new figurative relief sculptures I am working on in the studio. In all, there will be a series of at least 6, possibly 8, figures. These are sculpted from foam remnants leftover from the most recent scenic sculpting job I worked on in Culver City. I saw interesting figurative shapes in these scraps, and am using various knives, files, and sanding pads to bring the shapes to life. These are mounted on 1x6 and 1x8 panels that can hang flush on the wall. Stay tuned...

I recently changed up my work schedule to go directly in to the studio in the morning and leave all the art “business” stuff (like this blog) for the afternoon or evening. That re-arrangement cleared my path to a potent, electric, and transformative moment in my studio on March 26, 2009. The experience is almost beyond words, so I will have to let the art speak for itself now and as it develops. The initial paintings that burst forth are shown below. In one solitary moment, I awoke to limitless possibilities. Stay tuned...

Portraits of Sculpture

The following paintings are done in india ink on canvas board. These works are inspired by the sculptural works of masters like Brancusi, Giacometti, and Julio Gonzalez. The latter sculptor I became intimately familiar with through my work as exhibition designer and installer at the USC Fisher Museum of Art. My first show was the installation of works by Gonzalez - the Spanish artist who collaborated (introduced) Picasso to welded metal sculpture.

NEW - Mexico Seascape Painting Underway
